Moldylocks and the Three Beards

Moldylocks and the Three Beards
Written and Illustrated by Noah Jones

Publisher’s Summary:
Based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. After falling through the refrigerator into the Land of Fake Believe, Princess meets a girl named Moldylocks who takes her to the home of the Three Beards for chili–but when the Beards capture her friend, Princess must come up with a plan to save her.

Primary Source Pairing:
The age-old, classic story of Goldilocks is reimagined in this fun version including beards, not bears. Take a look at your collection and pull all versions of Goldilocks. Use the books themselves or the cover art to begin a conversation about the interpretation of this fairy tale. Alternatively, use the book covers included above.

Additionally, author Noah Jones includes discussion questions at the end of the books in this series, including this one: “Look at the picture of the Land of Fake-Believe on pages 20 and 21. How is it different from the world you know?”

Questions for Discussion:

  • What do you notice about the cover of these books?
  • What is the same from the traditional story? What is different?
  • Find a book cover that is a different interpretation than the traditional Goldilocks. What do you notice? Who are the characters in this version? What does the cover tell you about the story?

Activity for Group Work:
Make two copies of the book covers, enough for the entire class. Students are each given an image of a cover and instructed to find their partner who has the same book cover image. Analysis can be done in small groups or the teacher-led analysis can be done in a turn-and-talk fashion allowing for students to discuss their thoughts on the image together.
